What is detoxing? In short, it is a remarkable process that allows the human body to “get rid” of all the unwanted waste while eliminating the substances that don’t provide any benefit to the organism. A regular detox program brings a wide range of benefits affecting many different areas and organs in your body.
Our natural detox system
Of course, our body is designed to eliminate toxins, mainly via four organs: the bowel, the kidneys, the liver and the skin. The liver is often underestimated yet it is probably the most hard-working, detoxifying organ in the human body. It also has remarkable regeneration capabilities, although it does eventually wear out and fail if it is constantly processing toxins. The liver converts the foods you ingest and then changes these foods into a form that your body can use. It eliminates the body’s normal waste product through the bowel.
When the liver is overworked
When liver is overloaded and congested, the job of eliminating toxins from the body is delegated to the kidney, the skin, and even the lungs. None of these organs are as effective or functional as the liver at eliminating toxins, which is why you will experience damaging side effects when they are compelled to keep your body clean. For example, your body uses a glandular system to push toxins from the liver or the blood stream into skin tissue. Once the toxins from the blood come out through the skin, they are unable to eliminate any further, so you will experience skin irritations and diseases such as chronic eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
I believe that helping the liver to function properly is extremely beneficial to fight against skin disease. Every time you detox, you are giving your liver a break from the toxins it is battling daily through your diet. This break gives your liver time to replenish itself so it can fight toxins with more strength and vigor. A stronger liver means less pressure on the other organs, such as the skin, to take on the job of detoxing.
How to detox
While fasting is a highly recommended method of detoxing, personally I find that a juicing detox, using organic vegetables is an extremely effective way to gradually detox our body. When we are juicing, we tend to eat less, while we still provide our bodies with the nutrients they need. Elizabeth drinks a couple glasses of vegetable juice a day.
On an everyday basis, water is an excellent detoxifying agent as it helps cleanse and flush out the liver while rejuvenating cells.
